Viva las Vegas Design Team Audition

Well, do you ever do something and then go what the heck was I thinking? Well, here I sit going what the heck was I thinking? I know what I was thinking. I was thinking, "Wow they have fabulous images!" "Oh, I want to work with Terri." "Oh, I want to be on the design team." I forgot the part where I don't really like to color and I didn't have any Viva Las Vegas. I have some now because they sent me some for having their link on my blog. Anyway... add to the being rear ended and not being able to move much less craft and my audition projects did not come to fruition. I had planned to get my project done this weekend and then I decided to sweep. That was not the smartest thing after the accident. I literally could not straighten up. I was stuck hunched over. I went back to the doctor yesterday. They gave me physical therapy exercises and new muscle relaxers and a brand new anti-inflammatory drug that my insurance doesn't cover. I am able to move now, but leaning over my craft counter was more than I could do tonight. So, long story short is that I do not have a new wonderful project to share. I figured I would repost an old one that I think best captures my stamping style. I hope everyone has a wonderful day and good luck to all the people trying out for the Viva Las Vegas design team.

Monday Magic

Okay, I am going to try something new. I want to post something each Monday. I want to play with something I already have on hand and make a little crafty magic. I hope to do it ever Monday, but you never know with me. I decided to start with flowers. I have been suffering from cartridge envy recently. It seems like everywhere I turn someone is doing a project with the Art Philosophy cartridge and I don't have it. It bothered me for a while, but I decided this weekend that I need to pull out the cartridges I already own and make some magic.

I have the Mother's Day Bouquet Cartridge and don't use it nearly enough. I decided to pick one of the flowers on it and play a little. I picked the flower that is the third key on the top row. I cut it at 2 1/2, 2, 1 1/2, and 1 inches. I used a dry embossing tool to cup the center a little. Then I kind of rolled the petals back a bit to give it more dimension. Then I glued the layers together.

You can see it is still pretty flat. Blah would be a good description. I looked over my counter and immediately saw stickles. I looked at teh colors for a few minutes and decided on Waterfall. I just added it along the edges of the petals and then made a center out of stickles.It makes the flower much more interesting.

That made it nice and glittery, but the whole point of magic is to see how it changes things. I decided I needed to try another look. I grabbed a French Blue cats eye chalk pad and hit the edges of the petals before gluing them together. I love the depth it gave to the flower. I added some stickles just to the center.

You can see these are the same color paper, same cuts, same curling of the petals, but they look completely different. Here is a pic of all three side by side.

I couldn't stop there. I had to try it in a different color. Here is the same flower, but in yellow. I used Mustard seed distress ink and applied it direct pad to paper. I then glued it together and put a gem in the center. I love how it came out.

If you are like me, you have a ton of supplies sitting around not using them. Get them out and play with them. Things you already have sitting around can make a huge difference in your projects. I took one layer and lined it with several different colors of stickles. Think about how much that would change the look of the finished project.

So go play with some of the things you already have and make some crafty magic.

A Card, Yes you read that right... a card!

Okay, I don't consider myself a card maker. I have decided it would be beneficial to become a card maker and keep some cards on hand. I was doing some blog surfing this weekend and came across one of the best blogs I have visited in a while. It is My Cricut Craft Room: Erica's Craft Room . There is so much going on at this blog. Daily postings, Challenges, Swaps, and more... I decided to create the card for their current card challenge. I used two cartridges to make this card: Forever Young, Twinkle Toes, and Cricut Craft Room Basics. The two actual carts had never been used. They were still wrapped in the plastic shell. They probably still would not have been used it it were not for the free Cricut Craft Room. I went into CCR and started designing the card. It is really an easy program to use. Anyway... I laid out the card and then did the cutting. When I was looking for a rectangle with rounded corners, I found one on Twinkle Toes. I was looking for a person or animal to put on the card and found one in Forever Young. I was excited, because I was going to use not one but two carts I hadn't used before. It is one of my goals to use my cricut more.

Those of you that know me know I LOVE Echo Park papers. I wanted to use the Be Mine collection again they are great papers even though it is not Valentine's Day. I cut out the individual layers. I made the base out of Recollections black paper, as well as the lady and the word. Once I had it all layered, I added some black diamond and diamond dust stickles. What do you think? Okay, before you expect a post about Disney Land shift mental gears. Have you ever walked into a room and met someone that you thought had to be one of the kindest most genuine people you have ever met? Well, that happened to me times two. I walked into a scrapbook store before it even opened and the owners Faith and Arnie welcomed me with open arms. They are two incredibly wonderful people. They have created a crafting oasis. A place where you can go to buy scrap supplies, crop, or just stop and chat. Not all of you can run to Haughton,LA to meet them, but you can stop by their new online store. They have just recently opened their e-doors, but they are adding tons of product and have some of those items other places are sold out of already. A Banner for ??????

Hello Everyone!
First a quick update on the life. Gypsy is adjusting well to having one eye. She went for her follow up and is doing great. Courtney and I are now the ones with issues. This past week we were driving home from the rehearsal and Courtney was doing everything right when she was rear ended. We both have whiplash and are really hurting. They gave both of us muscle relaxers and that is kind of funny when I take mine. I have never taken muscle relaxers before, so when I take them I can't see the computer screen very well. It makes me feel all funky. Anyway, we are on our way to healing, but it just takes time for the soreness to fade. I feel better this morning than I have so far, so things are looking up today.

Now for the yummy goodness you are waiting to hear about. I am in a couple of swaps over on the Cricut message board. The swaps are my favorite. It gets me crafting outside my element in a style I think the recipient will enjoy. Anyway, I can't say who this is headed to, because a couple of the swaps are SS style swaps and I don't want to ruin the surprise if it is one of them.

I love stretching my supplies and pushing things past their normal use. I have the "Be Mine" collection from Echo Park. We all know I love Echo Park papers. I love the way they cut, the way they ink, the way they coordinate without being too matchy matchy. Obviously from the title of the collection it is a Valentine's collection and that holiday has already passed. I wanted to make something that could be for spring or anytime. Well there has been a lot of yuck going on in my world lately, but I refuse to give up on HOPE. I know things will eventually get better. To me Spring is all about HOPE, so a HOPE banner seemed to fit. I also thought it could be used in October for breast cancer awareness. It has plenty of pink and the right message. What do you think? I love comments, so let me know your thoughts. If you would like me to take you step by step on making a banner let me know. The cricut makes banners super simple and the shapes and possibilities are endless.

Pull out your punches!

It has been said by a friend of mine, that I hold on to things I don't need. That may be true of some things, but not about the item in question... paper punches. Her feeling was that since I have a cricut and more that a few carts I have no need for punches. As she says, "You can just cut it out on the cricut." We I really started thinking about it and looking at my punches and this is what I came up with.

first let me post a few pictures of what looking at my punches inspired. I played a little with three of them.

I started off playing with two edge punches. It was fun to make the rosettes on their own and then I spotted a photo sitting there and whipped up a layout.

Then I had some rosettes cut, but not assembled. Now I love my Tim Holtz mini rosette die, but it just looked plain. I decided it needed to be dressed up. I decided to cut different color centers with the cricut and for some reason my circles weren't coming out perfectly round. Well some were, but not all of them, so I grabbed the circle punch and it was quicker than getting out a cart, finding the image, selecting the size, speed, and pressure, loading the mat, and cutting. They also came out perfectly round. I hope you can see the difference in these pictures.

Then I started putting the rosettes together. It just looked too plain. I grabbed a snowflake punch and cut it so it lookes like leaves or a branch sticking out. I thought that showing them side by side would show the difference, but before I glued it down I moved the embellished center to the plain one and that is the bottom picture.

Anyway, I know I am cheap and won't spend money on a lot of things, but good tools make scrapbooking so much easier. I say buy all the tools you can afford and have space to house. I personally have room for both my cricut and my punches. I will continue to buy punches as my budget allows and as I find ones that I think I can use in more than one way. Hope you have fun playing with your punches.

Update on the Steampunk Puppy

Valentine's Day was a sad day around our house. Gypsy went in for her follow up and the eye was ulcerating. They had to remove her eye. It was pretty traumatic for Courtney. She reminds me of a parent in denial. Gypsy is doing fine now and looks like she is winking all the time. Hopefully that means life is getting back to normal and you will see lots of posts in the next few weeks.

Steampunk Valentine Hop

Welcome to my stop on the hop. I had really big plans for the hop. I have slowly been falling in love with all things steampunk and planned to whip out an absolutely stunning steampunk creation. I wanted to make a steampunk necklace for my darling daughter. Unfortuantely, I forgot I am not a jewelry maker. I ended up with an altered domino that hints at steampunk, but is no where near what I had imagined. It was a pain to photograph because of the mottled alcohol inks. It just didn't want to focus, but here is a peek.

When that didn't seem to come together, I decide I was going to make a steampunk inspired card. I found the perfect stamps on ebay and ordered them. Silly me, I forgot I am not much of a card maker and the stamps didn't show up on time. I should have ordered from Viva Las Vegas stamps. They have positively yummy steampunk stamps and they would have gotten here on time. So, there is no card to show a picture of at this time. For those of you who don't know two weeks ago today Gypsy (my daughter's rat terrier) had a run in with the lab and her eye popped out. She had to have surgery on her eye and she became our steampunk puppy. With the victorian collar and the tubing stitched around her eye she looks like something steampunk. I decided to share our poor steampunk puppy's story. I thought a scrapbook page with "We Love Our Steampunk Puppy" as the title would be perfect. I started creating and had this vision of a big steampunk heart. What do you think? It is so now steampunk wonderful. It looks way to cutesy. At least the dog isn't way too cutesy. Maybe she looks a little more steampunk...

I decided I have a long way to go before I become a master steampunk artist. With a bunch of work maybe I can pull off something wonderfully steampunk. Oh, I almost forgot the best part of a blog hop... blog candy. Since I wasn't smart enough to order from Viva las Vegas stamps, I think I will give away a $10 gift card to order some of their awesome stamps. All you have to do is leave me a comment. Unscripted Sketches #140

Well, if you haven't played along before here is what you do. Each week Unscripted Sketches posts a new sketch. It is meant to be an inspiration or jumping off point for your creativity. You take the sketch and make anything your heart desires. It can be a card, layout, altered project, cake...anything. The link your project, so we can see what yummy goodness you come up with. This is the current sketch....

Here is what I came up with...

This sketch gave me a really hard time. Even though I am round, I guess I don't work well with round. I finally ended up with this. It is just a small calendar I made for a friend. The papers are actually scraps from the Echo Park For the Record collection. I guess it is no big surprise that I used Echo Park since they are my go to paper now. I just love them. I need a few more of the collections though. I guess it is even less of a surprise that some of Tim Holtz's distress ink found their way on to the project. There there is Vintage Photo around the circle applied direct from pad to paper and a foam blending tool with vintage phot added the color to the calendar pages. The calendar template was free at Splitcoast Stampers. I believe the person who posted it was named Cat. I would love to see what you do with the sketch.

I know it is after Christmas, but I am sharing a Christmas craft I made for a friend. I had to make something that went with the words, "Oh Christmas Tree, Oh Christmas Tree." It was extra challenging because she loves teal/turquoise, so I wanted to make it in that color family. I have been looking online and love the coffee filter wreaths and trees. I was looking at my glimmer mist and perfect pearl sprays and know what I had to do... What do you think? I started to do a tutorial, but there are so many out there it seemed redundant. If you really want one leave me comments and I will do one. These are super simple and super cheap to make. They are stunning in white and would make beautiful centerpiece for a wedding. I think I am going to do one oncream to keep in my livingroom year round or how pretty in hot pink with a green or zebra bow for a little girls room?

Okay here are 10 of my favorite things I made this year. They are all things that I would want for myself, but they were made to suit the person they were intended to please. One is a cheat... it was actually made in 2010, but I didn't have a blog then, but it was designed with my sister at my side and taught as a class at my aunt's store. It has so many pleasurable emotions and memories connected to to it I might include it every year. I hope this coming year gives me some time with both my sister and my aunt.

Unscripted Sketches #139

Here is the last unscripted sketch for 2011. It was a crazy week as usual, and I had about 10 minutes to get a project done. That is what I love about the sketches at Unscripted Sketches. You can make them as elaborate or as simple as you want. They just work, and they help me get more done. Here is this weeks sketch and what I did with it. I hope you enjoy.

The photo is from about a year maybe year and a half ago, but I don't think that long. I was amazed by how different Nick is. He has changed from a little boy to a young man in the last year. He was mortified that I was using this photo, but it awed me. Here is my ten minute page that captured one of those moments when I realized life is changing.

One Little Word...

I was jumping through some of the blogs I follow and being a teacher that works with words, I was caught by the title of Bethany's post at Counterfiet Kit Club. It was entitled One Little Word. When I read, she talked about taking a challenged from Ali Edwards each year to choose a word to be the focus of your year. It made me start thinking about what I want my year to be. I am choosing INSPIRED. I want to be inspired this year. I am not just talking about in my crafting, but in my work, my faith, my daily life. I want each moment to count. I want to see what is around me and allow it to inspire me. It is time to shake off this funk I have been in and get inspired. I am sure that if I am inspired it will inspire those around and oh how grand life can be.

Well, I have been a terrible blogger this year. I don't do it often enough or thorough enough. I plan to do better in the coming year. I know it looks like an ordinary frame, but I intend for it to be a dry erase love note board. I made it for a friend and each day she can write something she loves about her children. A Little Altered Project

I have been looking at the frame for months. It was a cheap framed from the Dollar Tree. It was begging to be made interesting. I roughed up the surface so the paint would stick and slapped some acrylic paint on it. I cut the words out with my cricut, used a little Tim Holtz ink, and added some flowers and pearls. I think it is pretty now. What do you think?

I thought this was going to have several pics of this project, but I keep getting an error while trying to upload pics.

Well, I have been missing a a while. I am back hope to be a blogging fool. I miss creating and need the creative release. Here is my layout for this week's sketch. I used Crate Paper for the layout and tried to contrast with a kind of scary picture of my daughter. The colors were very soft, but this photo is not. Unscripted Sketches #112

Well, it is Saturday again. Another week has flown by and it is time for an Unscripted Sketches reveal. If you haven't seen what we do at Unscripted Sketches, let me fill you in. Every Saturday a new sketch and the design teams' projects inspired by that sketch are revealed. We then ask that you play along and link up what you create. You can use the sketch as is or flip it. Here is the sketch we used this week

After you check out what I created, head on over to Unscripted Sketches to see what the other designers created and then show us what you create. Between summer remediation, All-Stars, the little theater, and the kitchen remodel I was really pressed for time. Using the sketch allowed me to whip out a layout in now time at all. I kept it simple. I just wanted to highlight this picture. Courtney hates this pic, but I love it. It isn't fancy and it isn't flattering at all, but this is her. She was laying in the grass at one of Nick's parks and recs football game. It was hotter than Hades and she was just trying to stay cool.

Unscripted Sketches #111

Another week has flown by, and I was worried that I might not get this week's sketch done. I struggled coming up with an idea for this one until we were at the baseball tournament last weekend. Nick kept leaning over and saying this that started with, "So this is how it feels to..." The idea for this layout poppped into my head and here is is! I made the mistake of starting before printing the pics from the tournament and I had to use a horizintal picture. I liked the vertical prints better, but I didn't have time to reprint. Anyway... here is the sketch for this week.

I flipped the sketch upside down and this is what I came up with for the week.

I needed a little extra room to journal all the quotes, so I used two columns instead of one. It was a simple quick layout which is why I love these sketches so much. They can really be dressed up if you want, but they can be done quickly and easily. It allows me to record things I don't want to forget. Sketches are a tool to recording my children's lives.

The quotes say, "to be voted on to the all-star team" "to win more than you loses" "to be the number one seed" "to get on base 8 out of 9 times" "to stand tall when you hit" "to play in the championship game" "to know I am baseball!"

Unscripted Sketches #110

Good Saturday Morning! It will be a busy weekend for me. I plan to get up early and go to the farmer's market, and then we have a baseball tournament in Minden. It was a busy week, but I did get a layout done with this week's sketch. That is what I love about Unscripted Sketches... it allows me to get things done even when I am short on time. The sketches work when done simply like this layout or when really embellished and pushed over the edge. Here is the sketch for the week....

Like I said, I was running behind and had to work quickly. I decided to go with a scrapbook page. I had this picture of my son and sister laying on the counter and thought they are so alike. What a role model?!?! I say that jokingly, but she is a great person for him to look up to. I wish we were closer, so they could spend more time together. I kept things simple, but I think the page captures the feelings between the two of them.

Operation Kitchen Renovation aka Trying Not to Cuss Out the Hubby

Well, the kitchen remodel is well underway. All of my upper cabinets are gone as well as some of my lower cabinets. Two of my four walls have no sheetrock and the other two are missing part of the sheetrock. We are living out of cardboard boxes which wouldn't have been hard a few months ago. We used to eat out so much that cooking wasn't an issue, but we have stopped eating out. I have been cooking everyday. That may not sound like a big deal to many of you, but I have been known not to use my stove for weeks at a time. It was the big joke that I had to ask my sister to define skillet. My idea of cooking was frozen pizza or hamburger helper. My kids are in awe. I keep hearing what would Aunt Margie say if she could see you. Or I hear, "Wow! You really can cook." I am enjoying all the veggies I am cooking, but I remember why I stopped cooking. When you cook, you have to clean the kitchen. The only thing I do less of than cooking is cleaning. I have washed more dishes and wiped the counter down more in the last two weeks than I had in the last two months. I guess this means you can teach an old dog new tricks.

I will try to post a few pictures of my torn apart kitchen soon. This is going to be a long summer since most of this can't be done until we get paid for summer remediation. That means many of the supplies can't even be purchased until July 15th. It will be wonderful once it is finished, but it will be a long road getting there. I hope my hubby survives.

Yes, I know I have been missing. I am sorry, but my life just sort of fell apart for a time. I can't believe it has really been a month and a half since I posted, but it has. I think things are finally going to start getting back to normal. I hope so anyway. I am working on getting my craft room cleaned and organized. As soon as I get it in working order, I hope to have lots of goodies to share.

I was going to make some fabulous Easter project for you, but time got away from me and I was just not very Easter inspired the last couple of weeks. I happened to talk to a friend that spents $12 on a headband for her daughter to wear with her Easter dress. Well that seemed crazy to me when she could have made some flowers and glued them to a headband. I decided to see if you could make inexpensive flowers for headbands. I have seen many of the satin flowers and have seen that there are a variety of direction on how to make them and what fabrics work best. Some people have said not to buy cheap fabrics, so it was time to experiment. I bought the cheap costume satin from Walmart ($2.48 per yard). I bought a quarter of a yard in four different colors and spent $2.48 and it was enough to make 64 flowers with scraps left over.

On to the flowers...

Step 1 Cut four sizes of circles. I used the Sizzix originals die Circles #2. I folded the fabric to the size of the die and it ended up being 16 layers of fabric. I was a little afraid that it wouldn't cut, but I wanted to see what my Vagabond could really do. It cut through the 16 layers of fabric. I was impressed.

Step 2 Heat the edges to melt the edges of the fabric. Here is where I have seen many differing directions from heat guns to candles. I used my embossing heat tool for the ones on the left and long lighter from the Dollar Tree for the ones on the right. You can see they gave different results. The open flame caused it to curl more. I tried to decide which one I like better and it depends on what I would be using them for. They both would have their uses.

Step 3 I used a piercing tool to poke a hole and insert a brad through the layers of fabric. I have seen some people say they sew them and others glue them. I didn't have the patience for either of those options. I poked and hole and used a brad....quick, easy, and no drying time.

Unscripted Sketches #102

It is hard to believe it is Saturday again already. It has been a very busy week. Baseball season started and I was working on some projects. You mix in that it was high stakes testing week and internet issues it equals me not blogging in a week. Sorry girls, it will be better this week. Hope you enjoy this week's creation!

Well, I have a new love. It is called Yes Paste. It is wonderful. It used to be when I was doing an altered project I would use modge podge. I hate how it crinkles the paper though. I switched to Aleene’s Tacky Glue in the brush on bottle and watered it down a little. It was less crinkling, but still kind of messy. A wonderful friend on the Cricut Message Board mentioned Yes Paste and I thought I better try it. I tried several times, but M’s was out of it. When they finally got it in, I tried it to attach paper to a stretched canvas. It worked wonderfully, but you know me always trying to fix things that aren’t broke. I decided to try the modge podge again. I was very disappointed. The paper crinkled some. I was able to salvage it, but I definitely wasn’t as happy with the results. Anyway….I learned from my mistakes and it is back to the Yes Paste for me.

I made this canvas using some Cosmo Cricket papers, but I really didn’t like the matte finish of the papers. This was for a little girl and even though the papers are in girly colors, I just wasn’t satisfied. I decided the paper needed some shimmer to it and I decided to try my hand at making some do it yourself glimmer glaze. I used a couple tiny spoons (like the size of the tasting spoons at Baskin Robins) of iridescent medium, a few drops of distress reinker, and water. I stirred it up really well and had this shimmery green liquid.

I used a brush and painted on all of the papers. Because I used only a few drops of the distress ink, the color was very sheer and not overbearing at all. I think this pic will show how shimmery the paper turned out. I loved the result, but didn’t think it was the same result you would get from real glimmer glaze. I was under the impression that glimmer glaze was thicker more like nail polish. I have since received a bottle as a gift and it is the same consistency. I am actually quite pleased with my glimmer glaze.

The next technique I used was to redo this chipboard C. The C was in a pattern that wouldn’t match the canvas. I had seen a video where Tim Holtz did this to metal letters, so I thought why not chipboard. First I gave it a coat of white paint and let it dry. Next, I painted it again in white and then covered the wet paint with clear UTEE. I used the heat gun and melted the embossing powder. I wanted a smoother thicker finish, so I pressed it into my embossing pad and covered it in UTEE again. When I melted it this time it was much smoother.

Well, it is finally here! My first official sketch as a member of the Unscripted Sketches Design Team. I had fun with this sketch. It is the perfect sketch for a quick easy layout you can't help but love. The papers are from Echo Park's For the Record collection. I used my photos to follow the sketch. This layout would have been much different if I had used patterned papers where I have the photos and then added my photos on top. If I can find the time this weekend, I am going to use this sketch again and see how different it comes out.

It has been a crazy week. I just have not been on posting. Sorry everyone, I promise to be better this week. First I never posted the winner of my blog candy. With the help of a random number generator we have a winner and it is joydee1963. I sent you an email. I will get it out to you ASAP.

I thought I would go ahead and share something that hasn't made its way onto the blog yet. This is a simple two page layout I did using the Echo Park For the Record collection. I LOVE ECHO PARK!!!! Can we say KathyJo's favorite papers (for now anyway). Okay these are some pictures Courtney took of herself. She is into this self portrait thing right now and for the record she took these in the bathroom. I thought this was weird, but she thinks this is normal. Like I said these are Echo Park papers which I think are very fun and lots of Primas. The little flowers brads are Making Memories and the yellow cardstock is recollections. I am trying to pay more attention to what I am using, so I can let you guys know. Have a super day!

Purple is my favorite color, but not one I create with very often.

I included my first ever stick pin that I have made. The large flowers are some of my favorites to make. They are used dryer sheets. You simply cut four circles out of a used dryer sheet and fasten with a brad in the middle. Then spray with the glimmer mist of your choice. These are made with popsicle and cosmo.

I added a few fussy cut flowers.

Unscripted Sketches #99

Satruday morning I made a quick version of this sketch.... If you look back a few posts you will see it. Anyway I decided today to use the sketch again and this is what I came up with

Courtney actually loved this layout and she never loves the layouts I do of her pics. That is the beauty of a good sketch. If you start with good papers you love, it makes it a breeze to come up with a layout you love. I used the Life is Good Collection by Echo Park. Echo park has to be my new favorite paper line. This layout come together super simply.

· I started with a kraft 12x12 sheet as a base.

· I cut a piece of the simple stripes 6x9 and turned it to the pink floral side.

· I cut a sheet of the Set the Table 6x9 and turned it to the green floral side.

· I cut a piece of the striped scrap 2x3.

· I cut a 3 inch strip from the Seeing Spots. I used a 3x6 of the spotted side and 3x4 of the pink side.

· I cut a piece of cream colored cardstock 6x8 to mat the photo and used a border punch along the bottom.

· The letters beside the photo came from the Alpha stickers sheet.

· The three flower stickers came from the Element sticker sheet. I did trim the stem off of the pink flower.

The page came together in minutes and I love it.

Well everyone this is my first blog hop, so bear with me and my inexperience. If you arrived here from Clair?then you are headed the right direction. The challenge for the hop was to scraplift ourself. I decided to pull out one of my sketch/pattern books and use one that I have used many times before. I happen to love this one because it can be made new and fresh again and again. It is from the Cherish book. I love these pictures of Courtney. These aren't my first choice in colors for this layout, but there wasn't much left in my kit. I made several other things, but they can not be revealed yet as they are part of swaps.

Unscripted Sketches #99 and CFK Layout 6

I decided that it was officially Spring Break and I was starting it right....SCRAPBOOKING!!!! I thought I would combine two different challenges. I made another layout with my counterfiet kit and I used sketch #99 at Unscripted Sketches. It isn't a fancy distressed layout, but I wanted to do something quick before I started running around today. I hopefully have a softball game to go to later today. Our girls are playing in the state championship game. We won both games last night, and they are the #1 seed. Hopefully they will be playing in the championship game later today. Anyway... here is the layout. Hope you enjoy!

Altered Canvas

I made this altered canvas for a message board friend. It is to display a photo of her granddaughter. I really wanted it to say Wild About You!, but the background paper competed with the letters too much. The only way to notice it at all made it too overbearing, so I decided to leave the words off and add the feathers. These altered canvases are super fun to make. My daughter has made a couple for friends. We got a great deal on a 10 pack of 8x10 canvases, so they are inexpensive too. Courtney has been doing them with Modge Podge, but I used Yes Paste. I liked the results. There was no crinkling or bubbling using the Yes paste, and you have the normal paper texture without the Modge Podge. I added feathers, a stick pin, gold paint dabber around the edges, a mat, and the flowers. Some of the flowers are Primas with ice stickles and gem centers, but some were fun to make. The two larger flowers were made out of recycled dryer sheets. I cut circlkes out of the used dryer sheets, added a brad to the center, and then sprayed them with glimmer mist. I like the end result and hope you do too.

Here is a layout featuring my beautiful daughter. I pulled from my kit for this. I didn't have all of the flowers in my kit technically, but they were in my stash and within arms reach, so I count that as kit. I started to pull some of the chipboard letter for the title, but my Gypsy was sitting there and asked to be used instead. Hope you enjoy!

It has been a busy couple of days, but I was able to get a single page layout finished. I realized that I did not put enough cardstock in my kit. I am not counting it as cheating to grab solid color cardstock since it is in my stash and I really didn't know I was going to be this productive. When you first look at the page it doesn't look like I even used the kit, but I did. The tattered old looking paper was the cream colored cardstock from the kit. I just tore it and inked with black soot, vintage photo, broken china, and brushed corduroy. I used a mask and foam blending tools. I cut the letters using my Gypsy and the free BlackLetter download. The arrow is from my kit and dabbed with the metallic paint dabber. It is a quick fun page that captures my kid's personality.

Okay, I definitely love having a kit to work with. It moves me out of my normal distressed style and makes me productive. Normally school nights would not produce a layout. In fact I don't know that I have ever created a layout with pics and journaling on a night when we had school the next day. Anyway... here is a quick layout I made this evening. It is finished and blogged before I even have to leave to take Courtney to dance. Notice that I used several pieces of chipboard that came in a big package I have had for about four or five years. I created yet another layout that is not my style. I don't know if it is the kit I put together or just the mood I am in today. Nick came in the room while I was working and liked what I was doing with the white pen. He normally has no interest in my scrapbooking even if they are pictures of him. It was out of my normal element. I bought the white pen about six months ago because I saw it being used on so many projects and this is the first time I have used it. Hope you enjoy!

Okay, I don't know why my pics turned themselves sideways, but I don't know how to fix it on this blog. I am not responsible for cricks in your neck. Hope you like it even though they're not acting right.

Counterfeit Kit Layout #1

This two page 12x12 layout is the first from my forged kit. I am loving this whole forgery bit. This layout is pretty simple. I kept this very minimalist because the focus here is the story. It isn't even the photos. I could have done this layout without any pics at all. You can see there is a ton of journaling. I think I will go ahead and copy and paste the text here since there is a beloved aunt or two that will see this and want to know what it says and who that guy is with my daughter. I hope you enjoy even though this is not my usual style.

Walt Disney once said, “If you can dream it, you can do it!” I am so glad I have a kid who can dream. Courtney had an assignment for her freshman English class. It was a mini version of their senior project. They had to do a research project on their chosen career field. Being that she is in talented theater, she of course chose acting. One of the requirements was an interview. Through a series of phone calls trying to line up an interview, we were faced with a possible interview with Gerard Butler. She was so excited, but sadly it fell through. She did however get to interview a casting director.

On Thursday, February 24, 2011 Courtney took the first step in making her dreams come true. She sat down to interview Ryan Glorioso from Glorioso Casting. Ryan was great. He made Courtney very comfortable even though she was terribly nervous. He answered her questions with candor and made her laugh. Ryan didn’t promise her a career in acting, but he did steer her in the right direction. He told her how to go about getting an agent, and that is currently in the works. He also made her realize that acting is just one part of the film industry. She is now very interested in learning about all the other aspects of film making. He told her that to get into casting an internship is the way to go. Then he did the most amazing thing, he asked how old she was. She told him she turned fifteen the day before. He looked at her and said, “Well, when you start driving , Call me!” There was no promise of a job offer, but I think he was impressed that a fifteen year old freshman had drive, ambition, and intelligent questions.

Ryan told her to drive by the new Millennium Studios they are building in downtown Shreveport. Courtney took pictures to record the building of her future work place. With her passion and determination, I see she really could be filming there someday. Hopefully someday sooner rather than later.

Courtney is now one step closer to making her dreams a reality. She knows that an acting career is not an easy path, but she also knows that she has options. She had not gotten a birthday present, because we thought she would be taking driver’s ed. She is getting headshots for her birthday. Ryan said that is the only thing she should be paying for when she signs with an agent. No upfront fees. No showcase scams. Nice headshots and let the roles come … That is the dream. That will be what she does. One day that is the reality!

Into the Woods Counterfeit Kit...

I Put together my version of the main kit, the Sunny Clearing add on, and the babbling Brook add on. I have already made a double page layout using my kit. It is nothing fancy, but a story has been told, recorded, and preserved. I hope to make plenty of projects with this kit. I pulled mostly stuff I have had for ages. The chipboard letters in the bins will replace all the Thickers. I also pulled a lot of chipboard. Everything except for the Bloomers trim I have had at least six months. Some of it I have had as long as for or five years. I still need to pull some flowers and stamps to use. I need to use up this old stuff in order to justify buying new stuff.

Counterfeit Kit Challenge

I have been anxiously awaiting the 5th. I followed a link from Crystal's blog and found the most incredible blog. Each month they choose one of the kit clubs out there to forge. You then pull things from your stash to create your own version of the kit. I decided this was the perfect challenge for me since I have tons of stash and need to become more productive. This month there is actually one main kit and four optional add on kits to copy. I didn't realize it would take me so long to create the kits. I spent a little over an hour this morning and creatred my version of the main kit and have about half of the stuff pulled for two of the add on kits. It took me a little longer, because I had a stack of prints sitting on the counter that I want to get scrapped. The butterflies and bees of the kit didn't seem right for the pics I have picked out, so I changed the color scheme up and got to pulling papers for the kit. I am excited and ready to start working. I will take pics of what I have pulled together as soon as I finish the add ons. I think I am only pulling for two of the add ons and will only pull the other two if I am getting enough made with what I have in this kit. A mini for a friend...

This is just a little mini booklet I made for my showbox swap. One of our words is heartfelt. I thought this little booklet would be a great place for her to write reasons she loves her husband, children, and grandchildren. I little reminder of the things that make them special today. They change and growup so fast that someday when they look at it they will be reminded of something that made them special to her. There is a place for a pic and then a little journal spot to go with it. There are also a few tags tucked in pockets.

Fire and Ice

If you are looking at this you are probably thinking this doesn't look like fire and ice at all. I created this for my partner in the shoebox swap. I am posting it here because she is not a follower, so I think it is safe even though it is supposed to be a surprise. In this particular swap we get a list of words or phrases and you are to make or buy something to go with each word. On of the phrases was fire and ice. I am thinking most people are going to be thinking way different from me. "Fire and Ice" happens to be the title of a poem by one of my favorite poets Robert Frost. So, I decided to frame the poem. Her home decor is browns and greens with a rustic feel, so I went with the browns, greens, and crackle paint. A few flowers and a little bling finishes it out. I love these $1.00 wooden frame at Michaels. I have used several of them. I try to keep a couple on hand for quick gifts. Hope you like it!

Books...My Other Love

In addition to crafting, I spend a great deal of time reading. I guess that is why I became a Literature teacher. I definitely don’t teach ELA because of my great spelling or grammatical finesse. I love books. Although my sister reads, I don’t think she loves books the way that I do. I don’t think she has the same friendship with the characters that I do to the point where I sometimes mourn their loss when the series is over. Yet, this passion for books is because of her. She played school with me when we were little and taught me to read and love stories before a teacher ever gave me that gift. At times in my life when I was scared or lonely or things just weren’t happy for me, books were my refuge. They took me to other places where I was safe and happy. So Margie if you are reading this, thank you. It was the gift of a lifetime.

Anyway…to the point of today’s post. I thought I would start sharing what I am reading. Most of what I read is young adult fiction. I know, I know, why would a grownup want to know about kid books? Because they are amazing why else would you want to know about a book. They are great stories. It is much harder to get young adults to want to read, so they have to be better than they were when we were kids. It has to beat out Facebook, YouTube, Mtv, and the hot guy that lives down the street. In addition, most young adult fiction is missing much of the trash in adult fiction. It comes closer to reading Christian fiction. Most, but not all, of it is clean. I am currently reading the Gone series. I finished Gone and am now reading Hunger. It is a about a California town that has a nuclear power plant. One day everyone fifteen and older just disappears. There is a barrier around the town and some of the kids start developing powers. There is also this hunger in the darkness that is calling to them. The phones, internet, and tv all go out. The kids have to figure out how to cope and go on living without adult supervision. As I am typing this I realize just how weird that this sounds. It is really good though.

Right before this I read Hush, Hush and Crescendo by Becca Fitzpatrick. I have several people reading them now because they are so good. My students have been fighting over who gets my copy next. It is about a fallen angel and they are amazing books. I am so peeved because I have to wait until October 25^th for the third one. Take my advice, you want to read these books.

Not much crafting going on the last few days. Yesterday was my child’s 15^th birthday. I can’t believe she is growing up so fast. How does the time just slip away? Anyway, there was a softball game after school and she had her college class last night. Today I had to take her to interview a casting director and it was a wonderful experience for her. I wish I had been driven to reach my dreams at that age and that I had had someone willing to guide me and help me make the contacts I needed to make. Well, made I don’t wish that because then I would have a very different life than the one I am now living. Well, more on the casting director another day. Hope you aren’t bored by my musings.

Altered Paper Clips...

Okay, I had another swap to get finished. It was an altered paperclip swap. I also was in two groups for this one. I did gifts for one and hearts for the other. The flower paperclips are just some others I was playing with. I am really loving these paperclips. Being a teacher, I use lots of paperclips and I use them as bookmarks. I know other people use them on layouts and cards, but I use mine for everyday life.

Handmade charms...

I am in a swap over on the cricut messageboard. We had to make ten handmade charms . I am in two different groups. I am in two groups, so I had to make two different ones. I haven't made charms prior to these. I did the red ones weeks ago. They are grungepaper painted red with grungepaper flowers painted white and then embossed with clear utee. There is an irock stud in the center. It took me awhile to get around to doing the second one. I need to get them mailed, so this weekend is when it had to happen. I went with grungepaper again. This time I painted it with an espresso paint dabber. I added a couple of primas and pebble in the center. I hope they like them. I know some of the people were going with beads and that makes me a little nervous. I hope mine aren't TOO different.

Today I worked on baseball jerseys. Baseball season is starting and we need to get jerseys ready for the team. My son is playing on two different teams, so I got volunteered (by my husband) to make jerseys for both teams. This was my proto type for the Bucs. They are actually going to be on royal jerseys, but we didn't have an extra to practice on. The ones I made for the allstar team had an odd number of letters. This had to be split where it buttons up since it was only four letters. I think they are turning out pretty good. What do you think?

Well, at 9:30 my darling 12 year old son comes to me and says, "Can you make something for Lacey for me." I say sure and ask what he would like for me to make. He says, "I don't know. Something with paper. You know like you would make for one of your cricut friends. Maybe something that flips or folds. She likes purple." I say okay I will make it this weekend. I am thinking Valentine's is Monday; I have the weekend. He tells me, "No! I need it in the morning. She won't be there Monday." Well, some Outback coasters, some paper, a little bling, and an hour later this is what I have. He is pleased with it. It just needs to dry before morning.

Well, trying to figure out the whole blog things, so I need to see if I can post pictures. These are pics of a picture frame I altered for a friend on the Cricut Message board. It was part of the shoe box swap.

Well, I decided to bite the bullet and start a blog. A place to post my thoughts and share some of creativity. We shall see how regularly I post.
